Thoguluva Meenatchi Iyengar Soundararajan (T. M. Soundararajan), widely identified as TMS, was an Indian playback singer and Carnatic musician whose career shaped Tamil film music across more than six decades. Born in Madurai, he began formal Carnatic training at the age of seven under Chinnakonda Sarangapani Bhagavathar and later studied with Arayakkudi Rajamani Iyer. He began performing on stage in his early twenties before entering the Tamil film industry.
Soundararajan made his first film recording in 1946 for "Krishna Vijayam." His career gained momentum during the 1950s, when his voice became closely associated with leading Tamil actors M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan. His ability to adapt pitch, diction, phrasing and emotional emphasis to different screen personalities made him a major playback presence. His work with composers including M. S. Viswanathan, K. V. Mahadevan and Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy produced a substantial body of songs across several decades.
Soundararajan also appeared as an actor in films including "Pattinathar," "Arunagirinathar," "Kallum Kaniyagum" and "Kaviraja Kalamegam." His career earned several honours, including the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Kalaimamani. His contributions were further recognized through his inclusion among legendary Indian singers commemorated on a Government of India postage stamp.
T. M. Soundararajan died in Chennai on 25 May 2013. His recorded legacy remains closely linked to the major stars, composers and lyricists who defined an important period of Tamil cinema, while his devotional and classical recordings preserve another dimension of his musical work.
